Crawford Name-Based Case Searches
Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, known as WCCA, is the official public search layer for Crawford County Circuit Court. Felonies, misdemeanors, criminal traffic, civil, family, small claims, and probate all appear there. The recipe is short. Enter last name, first name, and Crawford County. No account is needed for basic searching.
- Open WCCA directly or through the state case-search hub.
- Select Crawford County for a local search.
- Enter at least three characters of the last name, then add the first or middle name when needed.
- Add a case type, status, or valid date range to narrow common-name results.
- Compare county, case type, filed date, number, and status before opening the case.
A birth date is optional. Pair it with a party name, or use a business name instead. Keep the first filter broad. The portal may show CAPTCHA controls that protect system availability, and they must not be bypassed.
| Field | Type | Required | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last name | Text | Yes for party search | At least three characters; wildcard rules apply. |
| First name | Text | Sometimes | Narrows common-name Crawford results. |
| Birth date | Date | No | Use with a party name, never alone. |
| Business name | Text | No | Alternate search for an entity party. |
| County | Selector | For local mode | Choose Crawford County. |
Crawford County's WCCA Search Path
Crawford County has no county-built case database of its own. Its official FAQ points to WCCA, and the Wisconsin case-search hub routes circuit matters there too. The state hub distinguishes circuit access from appellate search.
Pick Circuit Court Access for a trial case in Crawford County. After a matter reaches the Wisconsin Court of Appeals or Supreme Court, switch to WSCCA. Federal matters live in PACER and CM/ECF, not either state portal.
Searching WCCA is free. Yet free case information leaves out many filed documents. Treat a public print view as a working copy only. Certified copies, pleadings, judgments, orders, and older records come from the Crawford County Clerk of Circuit Court. Public access applies where allowed.
Crawford Case Number Searches
The strongest search key is a full Wisconsin circuit case number. It combines a four-digit year, a two-letter case type, and a six-digit sequence: 2024CF000001. That example shows form only, not a real Crawford County case.
Common type codes are CF for criminal felony and CM for criminal misdemeanor. CT means criminal traffic, and TR means traffic. CV is civil, SC is small claims, FA is family, and PR is probate. Take the type from WCCA or from the court paper itself. Guessing a code from the dispute invites mismatches. WCCA help can repair omitted century digits and leading zeros. Entering the complete number remains the safer play. It guards against false matches.
Advanced search splits year, type, and number range into separate controls. The chosen type must match the range used. When a number fails, check punctuation and zeros and confirm Crawford County. Then fall back to a name search.
Crawford Search Wildcards and Limits
WCCA enforces minimum-character and wildcard rules. A party or business query generally needs at least three characters. Add the wildcard shown in portal help. Adding a first name, middle name, or birth date narrows things down. A checkbox can also include parties whose middle name or birth date is blank.
- Wildcard
- The asterisk used with a partial name under WCCA help rules.
- County-limited search
- A query restricted to Crawford County rather than all Wisconsin counties.
- Case status
- The portal categories Closed, Filed Only, Open, and Reopened.
- Date range
- A filing, disposition, or offense span limited to 30 days in advanced search.
- Issuing agency
- An advanced field available after a county is chosen.
A case-type search needs another criterion alongside it. Date fields check their own range. Open wide enough to catch the right record, then verify identifiers inside the result.
Crawford Case Search Results Explained
A result list is just an index to public case information. Click the case number to open the details. Then use Next, Previous, or Return to Search Results. A printer icon can make a PDF of the page on screen. That PDF is not a certified court record.
| Case Number | The Wisconsin year, type, and sequence identifier. |
|---|---|
| Parties or Style | The public caption and roles, subject to privacy limits. |
| Case Type | The circuit classification, such as criminal, civil, family, or probate. |
| Filed Date | The case filing date, not necessarily a hearing date. |
| Status | Open, Closed, Filed Only, or Reopened; status alone does not state the outcome. |
| Events | Dated filings, hearings, orders, and dispositions when public. |
| Upcoming Activity | A future setting when entered and available to the public. |
A docket entry may name a document without showing its image. A filing is a request, not a ruling. Track down the later signed order, judgment, or disposition. When the actual document matters, contact the clerk.
Three Crawford Court Search Systems
WCCA, Wisconsin eFiling, and WSCCA each serve different users and records, and mixing them up sinks many searches. The state's CCAP overview explains the system behind public circuit access.
CCAP is the court's case-management system. WCCA is its public-facing circuit search. Wisconsin eFiling is a registered workspace for filing and for party or attorney document access, while WSCCA holds appellate status and certain appellate filings.
| System | Best use | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| WCCA | Public Crawford circuit case information | Not every document image or restricted case appears |
| eFiling | Electronic filing and party access | Not an anonymous public docket substitute |
| WSCCA | Wisconsin appellate case status | Not the Branch 1 trial docket |
Crawford County and State Search
No competing Crawford County portal exists. WCCA itself offers statewide and county-limited modes. Choose Crawford County mode for a known local matter. Statewide mode works better when venue is unclear, though you should then confirm the returned case truly belongs to Crawford County.
| Statewide WCCA | Crawford County WCCA |
|---|---|
| Searches public circuit information across Wisconsin. | Restricts the same system to Crawford County. |
| Useful when the filing county is not known. | Useful for a known local case or common name. |
| Can return many similar party names. | Reduces results but does not cover municipal cases. |
For a known case, compare number, county, type, filing date, and status. A similar name alone is not a match. The clerk remains the source for an official copy and for any question about the court file.
No Crawford Docket Search Result?
A blank screen is not the final word. Before giving up on a Crawford County docket search, check the spelling of the name. Confirm you picked the right county. Loosen any tight date filter or case type limit. Citations have alternate WCCA formats worth trying: X111111-1, 111111-1, or X111111. Ticket and portal numbers do not always match.
Venue matters too. Prairie du Chien Municipal Court runs its own ordinance and traffic docket. It offers no official public search online. Reach it at (608) 326-6340 or by mail at PO Box 324, Prairie du Chien, WI 53821. Circuit court records are a different door. Use the clerk counter or public terminal at 220 N Beaumont Road, call (608) 326-0209, fax (608) 326-0288, or mail a request that spells out what you want to inspect or copy.
Older files need a clerk check. Pre-CCAP, paper, microfilm, archived, or document-heavy records may not appear fully in WCCA.
A quick set of questions saves time. Ask which portions of the file are public. Ask whether older records sit in archive storage and what copy fee applies. Also ask how a written request should reach the office. The Wisconsin Open Records Act supports access in principle. Court rules and confidentiality laws still govern what a court file can release.
Which Crawford Cases Stay Restricted
Not every case appears in full on WCCA. Sealed, confidential, juvenile, and expunction-related details may be omitted or trimmed. Two statutes control the biggest carve-outs. Wisconsin Statute §938.396 sets special access rules for juvenile records. Section §973.015 governs expunction. Redactions also shield family, probate, victim, witness, and juror identities. Protected financial or identity data stays hidden too. The Wisconsin redaction guidance lists the protected data types. It also explains why they must not be pieced back together from a docket.
A restricted case may vanish entirely. Or it may show coded, partial entries instead of the full record. The clerk can tell you the current public-access result and the legal basis behind it. So ask directly. Never try to work around a CAPTCHA, privacy control, seal, or court access order.
Crawford Clerk Search Fallbacks
Holly R. Tanner, Clerk of Circuit Court, keeps the Crawford County circuit court records. The office sits at 220 N Beaumont Road in Prairie du Chien. Hours run Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. When remote access fails, the courthouse public terminal offers another WCCA route.
Call (608) 326-0209 before you mail or fax anything. A complete request includes the case number and the event or document you need. State whether you want a plain or certified copy. Add your contact information and how you want delivery. Confirm the fee and the accepted payment method with the clerk. The state fee table puts regular clerk copies at $1.25 per page. Certification runs $5 plus page charges, but the clerk should confirm the current total.
Different tasks go to different lines. Branch 1 handles scheduling, remote appearances, and adjournments at (608) 326-0205. Transcript orders go instead to the court reporter at (608) 326-0215. A docket lookup, a calendar question, and a transcript request each move faster with the right office.
