Crawford County Civil Docket Searches
Wisconsin Circuit Court Access is the free public route into Crawford County circuit cases. There is no separate county search portal. A full case number is the best search tool. For a party search, type the last name first. Add a first or middle name to narrow common results, then select Crawford County. A business name works too, under the portal's documented character and wildcard rules.
Choose the right type before you search. WCCA treats Civil, Family, and Small Claims as distinct choices, with judgment and lien categories alongside them. Case-type searches require one more criterion. Filing and disposition date ranges stay limited to 30 days under WCCA help.
- Open WCCA and select Crawford County.
- Enter the case number, party name, or business name.
- Choose the civil, family, or small claims type.
- Confirm the county, date, status, and parties before opening a result.
- Read events in order and ask the clerk for needed documents.
Crawford Civil WCCA Categories
Wisconsin case numbers combine a year, a two-letter code, and a six-digit sequence. One civil example is 2024CV000001. SC means small claims and FA means family. Treat the codes as hints only, and follow the type printed on the case papers and the current WCCA labels.
| Search type | Useful Crawford County focus |
|---|---|
| Civil | Ordinary civil actions and related classifications |
| Small Claims | Chapter 799 matters in the distinct small claims category |
| Family | Divorce, paternity, and other family cases when public |
| Judgment or lien | Separate docketing and judgment categories |
The wrong category can return zero results even though the record exists. Drop a narrow filter before assuming the case is absent.
Civil Dockets: What They Show
A Crawford County civil docket is a dated register of public case activity. It can show the branch, the parties in permitted roles, the status, and the events. It does not promise an image of the complaint, answer, exhibit, settlement, financial statement, order, or judgment.
| Case number | Wisconsin year, civil type, and sequence. |
|---|---|
| Case header | Filing date, type, Crawford Branch 1, public status, and judge. |
| Parties | Plaintiff and defendant or petitioner and respondent where public. |
| Filings | Complaint, petition, summons, answer, motion, or return events. |
| Hearings | Notices, settings, adjournments, and future activity. |
| Outcome | Order, judgment, dismissal, default, satisfaction, or appeal events. |
A filing entry only proves an item reached the record. It says nothing about whether the judge accepted its claim. Look for the later order or judgment.
WCCA Is Not the Civil File
WCCA offers case information, not a free warehouse of Crawford County civil documents. Wisconsin Circuit Court eFiling is not the anonymous public search either. Registered parties and attorneys get a filing workspace tied to their own cases. Everyone else gets pointed to the county clerk, per the state eFiling FAQ.
That distinction matters most for exhibits, signed orders, marital settlement agreements, and financial statements. Crawford's local eFiling tips list these as filed material. Protected identifiers must be redacted. Want a public image or a certified copy? Give the clerk the case and the exact event. A printable WCCA display is a working copy, never a certified judgment. The Crawford civil actions page adds a fair warning. Court staff can offer limited procedural information, not legal advice.
What Cases Fill the Civil Docket
Crawford County Circuit Court, Branch 1 handles the ordinary civil, family, and small claims matters. WCCA also lists related categories, from construction and condominium liens to foreign judgments, transcript of judgment, tax warrants, worker's compensation, and probate. Each type follows its own law and its own access rules.
- Civil claims involving money or other requested relief
- Small claims proceedings under Wisconsin Chapter 799
- Divorce, paternity, and other family matters where public
- Judgment, lien, and satisfaction entries
- Probate and related circuit categories under their own search types
Prairie du Chien ordinance and traffic disputes stay in municipal court when the citation names that venue. A forfeiture is still financial. That alone does not turn it into a civil WCCA case.
Crawford Small Claims Judgment Steps
Crawford's small claims material draws a line between a judgment and docketing that judgment. Docketing costs $5. It can create a ten-year lien, the county page explains. Yet it is not required just to collect. The lesson is broader: one docket event is not the whole enforcement process.
The same local page lists selected older fees. Those cover summons and complaint, mail service, writs, and copies. Check current amounts against the Wisconsin circuit fee table before filing. Court staff can explain forms and procedure within their role. But they cannot tell a party what claim to bring or what strategy to pursue.
Hearings on the Civil Docket
A Crawford County civil docket may list many entries. These include a notice, hearing, scheduling order, adjournment, or other upcoming activity. The filing date is not the hearing date. Read the newest event. A later reset can replace an earlier setting. Where details appear, confirm the date, time, room, judge, and activity type.
Check WCCA first. Need a current setting? Call the Branch 1 judicial assistant at (608) 326-0205 after reviewing the docket. That office handles scheduling, remote appearances, and advance adjournment questions. For the record itself and copies, the clerk at (608) 326-0209 is the better contact. And note: sending an adjournment request does not mean it was granted.
The county FAQ names Room 109 and Room 200, but the live case setting controls. Never infer the room from a prior event.
Older Crawford Civil Case Files
Civil files from the paper, microfilm, or archive era often sit outside WCCA entirely. So does material that is sealed or confidential. A no-result can also mean a misspelled name. Or the wrong case type, or a date filter set too narrow. Fix the search inputs first. Be sure the county selection is set correctly before you move on.
Still nothing? Go straight to the Clerk of Circuit Court. The address is 220 N Beaumont Road, Prairie du Chien, WI 53821. The counter is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call (608) 326-0209, fax (608) 326-0288, or mail a written request. Include the case number if you have it, party names, the approximate year, the exact filing you need, copy type, and how to reach you. Crawford County posts no dedicated civil copy form and promises no turnaround, so settle payment and postage with the clerk before anything goes in the mail.
Who Can See Civil Dockets
Most Crawford County civil docket information is open to the public. Wisconsin law and court rules still shield certain material, though. Children's information, guardianship details, financial statements, sealed attachments, and account or identity numbers all qualify. These may be withheld or redacted. Family and probate files carry their own document-specific limits. Keep one caution in mind. An attachment missing from a civil case record does not prove it was never filed.
Key Rules:
Wis. Stat. §19.31 states the policy favoring record access, subject to legal limits.
Wis. Stat. §19.35 provides a general inspection and copying right.
Wisconsin Supreme Court Rules, including Chapters 70 and 72, address court records and retention.
When in doubt, ask the clerk what that specific file holds for public viewing. If access to part of the court record is denied, request the legal basis or order behind the decision, plus any direction for review.
Crawford Civil Filing and Copy Costs
Filing a civil case in Crawford County costs money. The amount tracks the relief sought. The state fee table puts claims of $5,000 or less at $94.50. Claims over $5,000 through $10,000 run $147.50. Anything over $10,000 is $265.50. A no-money claim is $164.50, subject to current exceptions. These are filing costs only. Searching WCCA is free.
Copies are extra. The clerk charges $1.25 per page, and certification adds $5. Crawford's small claims page also lists $5 for docketing a judgment. The county page carries an older selected schedule. Verify totals against the current Wisconsin fee index and confirm with the clerk.
For procedure itself, the county's civil actions page explains Crawford civil filing procedure step by step, alongside the statewide fee rules above.
The county page walks through local civil filing procedure in plain terms. Read it together with the statewide fee index before you file or order copies.
